Five Vows of the Great Turning
Taking vows is a practice of continuous alignment and truth-telling. I practice these vows by Joanna Macy, and find them to be great refuge in times of not knowing. May they be of service to you:
I vow to myself and to each of you to commit myself daily to the healing of our world and the welfare of all beings.
I vow to myself and to each of you to live on Earth more lightly and less violently in the food, products, and energy I consume.
I vow to myself and to each of you to draw strength and guidance from the living Earth, the ancestors, the future generations, and my brothers and sisters of all species.
I vow to myself and to each of you to support others in our work for the world and to ask for help when I need it.
I vow to myself and to each of you to pursue a daily practice that clarifies my mind, strengthens my heart, and supports me in observing these vows.
“What if our indeterminate life form was not the shape of our bodies but rather the shape of our motions over time?”
― Anna Tsing, The Mushroom at the End of the World
